I actually researched the Calverts extensively but used only the parts that were relevant to this particular story. I've been doing some research into the Calverts of Manchester as part of a wider art history investigation, and your note that Mary's guardian was Elizabeth Pease finally enabled me to track down Charles Calvert's baptism record - 7th July 1754 at the chapel of the Venetian Embassy in London, with Elizabeth as one of the witnesses. Charles' parents were Charles Calvert and Maria Croft. This is particularly useful because it exposes a little lie which has been propagated across history books for centuries now - namely, that the Manchester Calverts (painters Charles and Michael Pease, and actor Frederick) were NOT nephews of Raisley Calvert, a university friend of William Wordsworth who died of tuberculosis at a young age and left the poet £900 in his will, liberating him from having to work a day job. As far as I've been able to tell, Charles Calvert (the older) spent years telling everyone that he was a descendant of the Barons Baltimore, his sons took him at his word, and then it became just "common knowledge" around Manchester which eventually made its way into the Dictionary of National Biography, confirming its truth... but I could never find a smoking gun that proved Charles the elder and the famous Raisley did indeed have different parents and weren't siblings until now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729709602062621134.post-53313173614653751232023-03-12T17:12:37.275+00:002023-03-12T17:12:37.275+00:00Your post gives a significant and important inform...Your post gives a significant and important information and insight into the Armenian population of Calcutta in the early part of the 19th century. I am fascinated by some of the statistics and if one were to consider the records for the period 1827-1835, where numbers of deaths are also available, the severity of the situation becomes more apparent. There was not only a short life span for the population but there was a terrible mortality rate of children. Considering the 8 years in the noted period, deaths far outweighed births and clearly there was an attrition of the local Armenian population. There were 108 births (average of just over 13 per year), 136 deaths (average of 17 per year) of which almost a quarter of them (32 in total) were children under the age of 2, the majority of these being age 1 or under. Although we might think that child mortality rates were higher in India perhaps than other countries, my own grandmother who was born in Julfa, in Isfahan, was one of 9 children. Three of her siblings died under 2 years of age and one died, age just over 18. We certainly have made great progress in preserving and extending life.
Andy M. Back in October of 2017 my son Zenon and I visited La Martiniere College in Kolkata during a trip when we were in search of some information about my great great uncle Carr Lazarus Phillips (subject of your post of February 2023). When I first saw your 'Letters From Afar' post, it immediately reminded me of my uncle Avedis Galoostian's letters to his sister Margaret (my grandmother) and her husband Movses (my grandfather). Avedis who was born in Julfa in 1899 attended La Martiniere in Kolkata. While I am not certain about the exact duration of his attendance there, according to his numerous letters that I have inherited, he was there in 1918 and 1919 at the very least. Unfortunately, Unlike Martin's positive and happy letters in your post, Avedis's letters were far from upbeat and positive. He felt lonely, somewhat depressed and missed home terribly. The state of his mind comes across in his letters to his sister. He never married and died in Julfa in 1952.
Andy M. I am unable to attach it here). As you walk into the churchyard and away from the hustle and bustle of the market and street outside it is a total transformation on the one's senses. The hidden tombstones were almost the first thing I noticed and stood there in deep thought not really knowing what I was exactly thinking or feeling. Your post makes it clear and answers the question that I must have been contemplating but was unable to consciously think about, which is who was buried there? My son Zenon and I were visiting Calcutta on a fact-finding mission about my great great uncle Carr Lazarus Phillipps, the subject of your latest post (February 2023). We must have literally missed you being at the church by days. I know how much time, effort and dedication it takes to try and dig for such details that you have included in this post. I am so happy that my son Zenon and you have connected and collaborated to document my great great uncle's life in India. Your post has prompted me to start reading your other blogs and I see family connections with several of them which I will comment on as applicable. As a person who was born in Julfa Isfahan, I find it fascinating to see such strong connection between people in Julfa in the 19th and 20th centuries and more interestingly that most individuals who moved there became such successful entrepreneurs. I often wonder what prompted them to move there and I think the answer lies partially if not wholly in the existence of the Armenian College. Please keep up your valuable work.
Andy M. Charles and Edward's mother, Eliza, was a daughter of Henry and Parla Lazarus, pencil makers in London. I haven't discovered if Jacob Lazarus was related to them prior to his and Eliza's marriage. But their sons were not the only Anglo-Jewish Lazarus family in Calcutta. I am, like the commenter above, descended from two Lazarus brothers, but they were from Exeter, Devon England. Many of the Lazarus extended Jewish Lazarus family of that city went into one aspect or another of the optical/optician's business. Two lines founded businesses in Calcutta. One was Lawrence & Mayo (many of the Exeter family adopted variations of the surname Lawrence); this is now a major company though it has long been out of Lazarus hands. The other was that of N(athan Lazarus. Curiously, his business was at the same address of Lazarus & Co, the cabinet makers, in Bentinck Street. (I believe the building still stands.) Nathan's sons carried on the business and it eventually moved to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. So yes, it is important to not make assumptions when doing genealogical research, but sometimes a family of the same name does turn out to be kin. My grandfather is of a Wesley Norman Forbes his name is James Frances Forbes and his wife's name is Agnes niblick Hill. My grandmother it's Marion Thompson her dads name is George Thompson. That's one side. My dad's family is Biggs he's Ronald Biggs his father was a service man for the royal Canadian Army. The story here is slightly confusing. Because I don't know my grandmothers maiden.Name. Edward Norman Biggs and he married Alice Jean. She's not from canada. I have slight information as to how they even met. He was stationed somewhere in the tropics or something and he married her. Her sister Mary came with them to Canada I don't even know what year. My grandfather then went to the Yukon with her they had 3 kids. Was in Saskatoon and Bordon and picton. I found a booklet for Toronto 1912 socialist and there is a Percy Biggs noted in the directory for military club and something called the 66. I'm trying to piece it together because it struck me odd that as I don't know my mothers moiddle name on the Forbes side. Then on my dad's the entire loss of my grandmother family. Just a great aunt. As well my step grandmother was in the Holocaust and just her and her aunt Louise survived. I don't know anything of her family. Other than she was adopted in England then moved here Louise moved to New York. I don't know the adopting parents last name nor her maiden name. And she married a Robert Johnstone from Scarborough that was an inventor for honeywell. I am wondering if you know where I would look for resources to patch this all together. I have had some luck but I don't know if I'm reading series that are my family or if it's going onto a while goose chase.
I

I appreciate any comments at all. There are no records of schooling despite a claim of education at St Peters, Agra. There is no record of marriage in c1911 and no Court records of employment. The records that have been found are the gravestones for Pherine and Phelomina erected by John Michael, Seth’s records sourced from “his friend” John Michael himself and information in the baptism records for John Michael’s children, also supplied by John Michael in support of his claim to the Reghelini name and inheritance.
Because of Seth’s failure to independently verify information or clarify with his friend John Michael why his mother and father purportedly had the same surname, the fraud perpetuated by John Michael has been given a level of historic substance. The descendants of John Michael Reghelini are using Seth’s book to create a false record on the internet with additional false names and dates to substantiate their claim about John Michael’s heritage. They have even created other fictional Reghelini lineage which confuses true historians. The John Michael Reghelini family tree on Ancestry with over 20,000 people creates a minefield for historians.
Chater Genealogyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02349149487236193289noreply@blogger.com
